What kind of videos are you editing?ĭifferent types of videos have different requirements. But however complex you want the final product to be, you will find the process far more enjoyable if you take a few moments to prepare from the very beginning, preferably before you even start to record any footage. Things to Think About Before Starting OutĮditing video can be as simple or as complicated as you want to make it.

There is a wide range of video editing software available to make editing your videos easy. Learning how to edit video is also important. Of course, capturing video is only one piece of the process. Most people have a capable camera already in their pocket. And this is undeniably a great time to do it. In the next chapter we'll take a close look at how to import files into HitFilm. From capturing family memories to taking entire businesses online, more people than ever are looking to get started creating videos. I'd recommended leaving them in their default positions until you've completed this course and feel comfortable with using HitFilm, as it will make it easier to follow along with what I'm doing in the videos. Panels can be re-sized by dragging on their edges, or you can even more entire panels to new locations. Note also that you can tweak and customize the interface to suit your preferences and screen layout. You can click on their names to view them and we'll take a close look at some of them later in this course. There are additional panels as you can see down here, next to the media panel. Those are the essential panels you need to know for any kind of editing. The while bar is call the play head and this identifies the frame that you're currently seeing in the viewer. This is because the timeline represents the edited project with time running from left to right. At the same time these numbers start moving in both the timeline and up on the view panel. If I press the Play button in the viewer, note how the vertical white bar in the timeline starts moving along from left to right. To demonstrate I'm going to drag the other video onto the timeline as well and place it after the end of the first one.

Whereas the trimmer on every previews a single clip from the media panel, the view shows your actual project. Although this panel looks superficially similar to the trimmer, it actually performs a very different role. Note how we now have the video showing up in the viewer panel at the top right. Right now it's completely empty, so I'll drag one of the videos from the media panel and drop it into a blank area on the timeline. Think of this like a map which shows where all of your different videos, images and bits and pieces will actually show up in your final video project. The big wide panel at the bottom here is called the editor timeline. Again I'll go into detail on how and why to do this in the chapter Essential Editing Techniques. So I could decide to just use this middle portion. This is where you can pick out the good bits of a source video file before actually using them in your project.

When I have a video selected it shows up in the trimmer panel here at the top. But by dropping the video files in you can see that they're now available for me to use in my project. When you start a new project the panel of course will be empty.

This is called the media panel and it's where where all image, video, and audio files will be found. I'll go into exactly how to do this in more detail later on but for now I'm just going to drag two video files from this folder and drop them into this panel down in the bottom left corner. So that I can demonstrate what everything does, I'm going to import a couple of videos that I shot earlier. Each panel contains something useful which will help you with your video editing. HitFilm's interface is split into numerous panels. And if you're completely new to this thing, don't worry, we're going to be going one step at a time. If you're coming from something more basic then there will be some adjusting to do. If you have any experience with other professional editing software, a lot of this will be quite familiar. This is great news, let's dig into the interface so that you can start to figure your way around. So by now you've got HitFilm installed and you've started your first project.
